Vasectomy and the risk of prostate cancerThe answer is C. If you've had a vasectomy, you're at no higher risk for prostate cancer. According to research funded by the National Institutes of Health, there's no relationship between having a vasectomy and the risk of prostate cancer. Researchers went to New Zealand to study this question, which has had some men -- and some of their doctors -- worried for the last decade or so. Why New Zealand? Because it has the world's highest vasectomy rate, and because all new cancers must be reported to a national registry there. The researchers interviewed about 2,000 men, about half of whom were new prostate cancer patients. All the men were asked about their medical, family, and lifestyle histories. Taking those sorts of factors into account, the research team found no effect on the relative risk of getting prostate cancer. They reported their findings in a recent issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
