Holiday Treats for Diabetics
Registered dietician and author Elaine Magee says there's no reason for people with Type 2 diabetes not to enjoy holiday food. It just comes down to sensibility and moderation.
Magee is author of the nationally syndicated newspaper column "The Recipe Doctor" and the "Tell Me What to Eat" series of books, including the newly revised Tell Me What to Eat If I Have Diabetes. Her holiday tips for diabetics include:
- Maintain daily exercise
- Monitor blood sugar more than usual
- Eat when you're hungry but stop when you're comfortable
- Eat smaller amounts of foods with sugar or refined carbohydrates
- Be a sampler at holiday parties - eat small amounts and avoid seconds
- Bring your own dish to holiday gatherings
- Spread carbohydrates throughout the day and beware of holiday beverages.
Between 90-95% of the people with diabetes have Type 2. Type 2 is characterized by the body's inability to produce enough insulin or to use insulin effectively. Type 2 diabetes is often associated with obesity.
