Mold and mildew

The answer is B. Houses that have been affected by the recent floods -- and even houses that have leaking pipes or plumbing problems -- should be cleaned and dried within 24 to 48 hours.

In hot humid weather, mold begins to grow on damp surfaces within 48 hours. Mold is especially prone to grow in places where water sits undisturbed, and in dark places such as wall cavities and beneath carpets. If the recent floods or even leaky pipes leave the carpets and rugs in your house damp, it is a good idea to dry and disinfect them with a detergent solution within 24 hours.

Be careful while cleaning moldy areas because mold spores may be released in the air when the moldy surface is disturbed. Inhaling these spores and prolonged exposure to mold can cause allergic reactions including itchy and watery eyes, sore throat, coughing and skin irritation. In some people, mold aggravates asthma and others may have symptoms of dizziness and fatigue.

Mold also reproduces easily in stagnant air. To prevent this, let air move through the house until it dries and is completely dehumidified to reduce the risk of growth of mold.
