This Sound Medicine Checkup segment originally aired June 13, 2010.

Sledding Injuries

One of the best things about winter is snow. Because snow is fun. Yes, shoveling the stuff is a pain. But what's better than making a snowman? Or having a snowball fight?

And the best thing about snow is, of course, sledding. There's just nothing like finding the perfect hill, jumping on your sled, and zipping down as fast as you can.

One thing about sledding, though: it can be pretty danger....

Hands-Only CPR

If you've seen CPR performed on television or taken a training class, you're familiar with the mouth-to-mouth and chest compressions.

Sound Medicine's Eric Metcalf explores a new form of CPR that experts say may be simpler, not to mention more appealing for bystanders to do.

Eric: If you're like me, in your daydreams you make a pretty good hero. But in real life, could you stride up to a str....

Electronic Cigarettes, Harmless?

For the past two years, a handful of new companies have been aggressively marketing e-cigarettes -- battery powered gizmos that replace the nasty smoke in tobacco cigarettes with a burst of vaporized nicotine.

Maybe you've seen an ad for e-cigarettes, like this one I found on YouTube.

So, what's the deal? Are e-cigarettes really so harmless?

Baby Babble and Language Development

Anyone who's been a parent is well acquainted with this sound. That, of course, is baby talk, or baby babble.

But beyond being extremely cute -- what are babies doing when they babble?

"During babbling and even in the periods of vocalization the precede what we call canonical babbling, the baby produces sounds that indicate that they're building the capacity for vocalizing voluntarily."
