Interview: Eliza Pavalko, PhD
Professor of sociology
Indiana University, Bloomington

Eliza Pavalko, sociologist at Indiana University, Bloomington, researches the relationships between women's work, health, and caregiving.

Pavalko discusses her finding that middle-aged women who become caregivers for ill or disabled family members are more likely to leave the workforce than to reduce their hours.

According to the study, unpaid family leave is the benefit most effective in helping caregivers remain in the labor force. However, Pavalko says, none of the benefits helped reduce the distress caregivers felt at the dilemma.
