Air date: April 1, 2007
Host: Barbara Lewis
Interview: Allan Coukell reports from Boston.
Perhaps you've heard the slogan "watch one, do one, teach one."
For a long time, student doctors have been trained on an apprenticeship system. They've learned by watching their physician teachers, then practicing their skills on real patients.
This is becoming less true today, thanks to simulation technology. Listen in as reporter Allan Coukell takes us several surgical training centers that employ simulators for teaching tools.
Not only do simulators improve patient safety, they help medical schools evaluate physician decision-making and teamwork skills.
