We’re coming to the end of breast cancer awareness month with lots of pink ribbons and a national focus on the latest breakthroughs in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
There’s also a new online database designed to support that research:
It’s a catalog of the breast tissue bank housed at the IU Simon Cancer Center, which contains samples of healthy breast tissue. The tissue bank is based on the theory that if researchers have a better understanding of what “normal” looks like, it will be easier to identify and treat cancerous tissue.
Joining Barbara West in the studio today are two cancer researchers who’ve been developing that tissue bank and it's accompanying database.
Dr. Susan Clare is an assistant professor of surgery at the IU School of Medicine, and Dr. Anna Maria Storniolo is principle investigator of Friends of Life, which is a partnership among patient advocates, doctors and cancer researchers.
