Between one-third to one-half of young people who try a cigarette will go on to become daily smokers.

That’s according to the American Legacy Foundation, the tobacco education organization that was started in the late ‘90s after the big tobacco company settlement.

And this information explains why so many anti-smoking campaigns are aimed at discouraging kids from taking that first puff.

NPR’s Patty Neighmond meets up with a teen smoker who's trying to quit.
