Did You Know?: Daylight Savings and Heart Attacks
I’m Jeremy Shere.
Did you know that clocks springing ahead one hour ahead when we transition into daylight saving time is linked to an increase in heart attacks?
That could be due to the hour of sleep lost when we move clocks ahead, according to a Swedish study. An hour of sleep may not sound like a lot, but for people with heart disease, an abrupt change in the sleep-wake cycle can cause problems.
So if you have a history of heart trouble, it may be a good idea to prepare for losing that hour of sleep by waking up a few minutes earlier each day during the week leading up to the shift. So when clock springs forward, it won’t be as much shock to the system.
And now you know.
