Did You Know?: More Education Means Better Health
According to a report from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Commission to Build a Healthier America, more education does mean better health.
Of the more than 180,000 people surveyed, nearly half reported their health as being less than good. Of those, a high percentage had less education than people reporting excellent or very good health. People with only a high school degree, for example, were twice as likely to report being less than very healthy than college graduates.
It’s not hard to understand why more education results in better health. Having less schooling often results in fewer job opportunities, lower incomes and more stress. And not having enough money can lead families to live in homes and neighborhoods that are not safe, which can cause more stress.
The more educated you have, the more likely you are to have a job providing health insurance. And chances are you know more about maintaining good health and have more time and means to exercise, eat well and take care of health problems.
And now you know.
