Compassion Fatigue in Caregivers
Host: Steve Bogdewic, PhD
Interview: Caroline Carney Doebbeling, MD
Associate professor of medicine and psychiatry
IU School of Medicine
Research scientist, Regenstrief Institute
People who spend their work lives taking care of terminally ill cancer patients and emergency room patients run a risk of developing "compassion fatigue," according to a new study by our next guest.
It may not be surprising, since the kinds of people who tend to go into medicine are often high achievers who don’t like to fail. But compassion fatigue can lead to problems among those caretakers, both physical and psychological.
Sound Medicine’s Dr. Steve Bogdewic speaks with Dr. Caroline Carney Doebbeling, an associate professor of medicine and psychiatry at the IU School of Medicine.
