Patients Reading Physician's Notes
Interview: Tom Delbanco, MD, internist
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston
Let's say you're sitting in your doctor's office, explaining why you’re having trouble sleeping. Your doctor is listening intently and scribbling notes on your medical record -- notes which you may never see.
For years, it’s been assumed that only other doctors would get to see what those notes in your medical record say.
But now, an internist in Boston is conducting an experiment.
For the next 12 months, he’s letting his patients have access to those notes online.
The question is: what effect will allowing patients essentially to "read over his shoulder" have on their care.
To find out, Sound Medicine’s Kathy Miller spoke with the experimenting internist, Dr. Tom Delbanco. She reached him at his office at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.
