Social Class & Patients' Evaluations of Physicians
Interview: Clemens Hong, MD, MPH, instructor in medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital
Evaluating doctors based on the quality of the care they provide has become a common practice.
But physician rankings and pay based on quality of care can be skewed by patients’ socioeconomic status and health insurance coverage, or lack thereof.
A recent study shows that physician quality rankings should take patients’ status into account. The lead author of the paper, Clemens Hong, MD, MPH, talks about his research with Sound Medicine's David Crabb, MD.
Dr. Hong's study is significant because it could help quality care rankings more accurately reflect the realities for docs working in community health centers and encourage more doctors to pursue that career path.
