Show: February 27, 2011:
Medical Students Honor Body Donors
Interview: Ernest Tallerico, PhD, assistant director of medical education and course director of human gross anatomy and embryology, IUSM-Northwest
We begin today with an ending: A memorial service honoring the people who donated their bodies so that first-year students could begin their medical education.
All first-year medical students take Gross Anatomy, an introductory anatomy course. At medical schools across the country, bodies of individuals who donate their bodies to science are dissected in Gross Anatomy courses.
Sound Medicine was invited to attend that unique ceremony at the IU School of Medicine, Northwest campus. The service includes not only students and their professors, but also the families of the donors.
Sound Medicine's Colleen Iudice reports from Gary, Indiana.
