The Strange Trial of Dr. Wouter Basson
Interview: Steven Miles, MD, professor of medicine and bioethics, University of Minnesota
We have a remarkable story now, about a doctor on trial for breaching medical ethics.
Even though it stems from South Africa’s anti-apartheid era in the early 1980s, a trial is underway now.
But first, Dr. Eric Meslin, the director of the IU Center for Bioethics, lays out the basics of story, starting with a description of “Project Coast.” And we should warn you: some of the details are graphic.
We also speak with Dr. Stephen Miles of the University of Minnesota, one of the expert witnesses for the prosecution in the South African trial of Dr. Wouter Basson, a physician who is accused of violating medical ethics by assisting in torture.
Dr. Steven Miles is a professor of medicine and bioethics at the University of Minnesota. In addition to his work as an expert on military torture, he has also served as medical officer for the American Refugee Committee on the Thai-Cambodian border, in Sudan, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzogovina, and Indonesia.
