From Gross Anatomy to Compassionate Care
Interview: Ernest Talarico, PhD
Assistant professor of Anatomy & Cell Biology
Course director, Human Gross Anatomy & Embryology
IU School of Medicine Northwest
This segment originally aired on Oct. 2, 2011.
One of the first courses in medical school is gross anatomy, a lab class in which students dissect a human cadaver. Students attending their first two years of med school on the IU-Northwest campus in Gary, Indiana, however, develop a unique relationship with the body they’re given. It’s more than a learning tool; it’s their first patient.
This week, Sound Medicine previews its live recording session of the Nov. 9 Spirit & Place panel discussion called "From Gross Anatomy to Compassionate Care," featuring IUSM Northwest anatomist Ernie Talarico, PhD.
Today Barbara Lewis talks with the panel participants, including Dr. Talarico, several medical students who participated in the course, and relatives of a body donor.
