The Patient from Hell
Hosts: Steve Bogdewic, PhD, Barbara Lewis
Interview: Stephen Schneider, PhD
When a patient hears that he has a serious illness, it can lead to a real roller-coaster of emotions: fear, anxiety, and a sense of powerlessness.
Dr. Steven Schneider is a scientist specializing in global warming. He has received a so-called 'genius grants' given out each year by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
Four years ago, he was diagnosed with a rare and deadly form of cancer.
To increase his odds of recovery, Dr. Schneider became involved in every aspect of his treatment. He questioned, he prodded, and he convinced his doctors to try experimental techniques and treatments.
And then he wrote a book about his experience:
"The Patient from Hell: How I Worked with My Doctors to Get the Best of Modern Medicine and How You Can Too."
Dr. Stephen Schneider is a professor of biological science and co-director of the Center for Environmental Science and Policy at Stanford University.
